Description

The experiment consisted of three distinct stages. Firstly, a survey was conducted to assess the participants' prior knowledge of artificial intelligence. Following this, a computer lab activity was carried out to evaluate the capabilities of an artificial intelligence engine for graphic abstraction; after completing this exercise, the students created a digital presentation and shared their findings and reflections with the class. As the final step, a questionnaire was administered to gauge the students' experience based on the activity results.

QUESTIONNAIRE ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE A questionnaire was designed comprising five questions. Students were provided with a link to access the questionnaire. Once students gave their informed consent, they proceeded to provide their personal information. Below are four 5-point Likert scale questions and one multiple-choice question where students were asked to select areas where they believed artificial intelligence could yield the best results. 1. Knowledge about Artificial Intelligence What is your level of knowledge about artificial intelligence? 2. Artificial Intelligence in Society What kind of impact do you believe artificial intelligence will have on society? 3. Artificial Intelligence in Design What kind of impact do you believe artificial intelligence will have on design? 4. Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Should the use of artificial intelligence be regulated? 5. Areas of Application for Artificial Intelligence In which areas do you think artificial intelligence could yield the best results? (Select all that apply) Art, Science, Design, Education, Research, Technology, Other (please specify). ACTIVITY TO EVALUATE THE CAPABILITIES OF AN AI ENGINE The objective of this activity was to determine the capabilities of an AI engine for the generation of graphic abstractions. The traditional process begins with a visual analysis of the model in question. Subsequently, the most significant characteristics of the object must be identified. Following this, the creation of pencil sketches on paper commences. This process is repeated until achieving a version that captures the essence of the model while aligning with the client's communication objectives. The proposed activity involves an alternative approach to graphic abstraction creation. In this case, artificial intelligence performs the process of analysis and abstraction of a model, following the prompts provided by an individual. The online platform Craiyon was selected to achieve this goal. CLASS ACTIVITY SURVEY This survey consisted of five questions and was administered after the classroom activity. After obtaining informed consent from the participants, they were asked to answer three questions using a 5-point Likert scale and two open-ended questions: 1. Overall Assessment Did the activity conducted in class help you learn more about the practical use of artificial intelligence? 2. Use of Artificial Intelligence for Graphic Design Overall, do you consider artificial intelligence a useful tool for graphic designers? 3. Use of Artificial Intelligence for Graphic Abstraction In particular, how useful do you consider using artificial intelligence for the graphic abstraction process? 4. Thinking Routine on Artificial Intelligence Write your opinion on the use of AI after completing the activity. Use the "I used to think... now I think..." thinking routine to do this. 5. Comment Write a final opinion on the topic of Artificial Intelligence.
