Description

The database contains particle-level images and associated size and shape descriptors for six geotechnically significant sands: Ottawa 12–20, Vieques, Cape Cod, Fiji Pink, Peace River, and Hawaii. Individual particle images were acquired using a QICPIC Dynamic Image Analysis (DIA) system at a resolution of 4 µm/pixel and are provided as isolated binary particle silhouettes in PNG format. The accompanying metadata contain particle-level size descriptors, including minimum and maximum Feret diameters and equivalent projected-circle diameter, as well as shape descriptors including aspect ratio, sphericity, convexity, and roundness.

Steps to reproduce

Particle images were acquired using a QICPIC Dynamic Image Analysis (DIA) system (Sympatec, Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Germany). During testing, dry sand was introduced at a controlled feed rate and dispersed through a 50-cm vertical fall shaft, allowing a well-spaced, isolated, particle stream to pass though the image plane. This dispersion process reduces particle overlap and limits excessive particle collisions. As particles traverse the imaging zone, a high-speed camera operating at 175 frames per second records the projections with 4-megapixel (2336 × 1728) resolution. A pulsed laser backlight was used to reduce motion blur and generate sharp binary particle silhouettes at an optical resolution of approximately 4 μm/pixel.
