Description

The design protocol data was analyzed based on the theory that object and spatial imagery are the two visual components of mental representation (Mental Imagery) in design. Since architectural design is mostly visual the black box of design thinking was demystified using the two Mental Imagery components i.e. Object Imagery and Spatial Imagery. This provided a neuroscientific understanding of the design process not explored before. The design protocol data was collected through video sessions with the subject during COVID-19 times. The design protocol explored the difference in activation of Object imagery and Spatial Imagery in two design mediums; Sketching and SketchUp. The design problems were isomorphic in nature and the design setting was kept similar for both the design mediums. The transcription of the design protocol is provided so that it can be utilized to analyze the differences in design medium with other design coding techniques.

The design protocol data was collected through video sessions with the subject during COVID-19 times. The design protocol explored the difference in activation of Object imagery and Spatial Imagery in three design mediums; Blindfold, Sketching, and SketchUp. The design problems were isomorphic in nature and the design setting and instructions were kept similar for both the design mediums. For skill in design medium self-report was utilized. The transcription of the design protocol is provided so that it can be utilized to analyse the differences in design mediums with other design coding techniques. For analysis, Microsoft Excel was utilized. The transcription of the verbalization and bodily interactions during the design protocol in three mediums are provided in a separate file. The file named supplementary material consists of design factors and how were they controlled for the experiment. Isomorphic design questions for the three design mediums and the design product produced by the subject are also provided. The final analysis of the design protocol is done in terms of 5 codes. Two were Object Imagery (OI) and Spatial Imagery (SI) cases. The third code was where activation of both the mental Imagery might be present (OI/SI). The fourth code was allotted to purely verbal utterances (V). At the same time, the final code was given to notations (N). These were the verbalizations and bodily interaction of the subject with the design medium.
