Description

This dataset contains a spreadsheet describing the organic and inorganic micro-findings retrieved by water flotation procedure from the archaeological site of 35 Exarch Joseph Str., located at the city centre of contemporary Sofia, Bulgaria and falling within the boundaries of ancient Serdica during the Antiquity. Soil samples were collected from this site for the purposes of bio-archaeological analysis of the materials retrieved from them. However, inorganic materials were also recorded when present in the samples.

Steps to reproduce

The water flotation procedure divided the material according to two flotation sieve apertures. The first one captured remains at a 1mm sieve aperture and is called Heavy Residue, abbreviated as “HR” in the dataset offered here. The second one collected remains at a sieve aperture of 250μ and is named Fine Flot, coded as “F” in the spreadsheet. The two flotation fractions (HR and F) were recorded separately, so a comparison between the data may be drawn (see Column A). Nevertheless, since each soil sample provided both HR and F fractions, they are described as adjacent rows, as shown in the attached data file. The way the spreadsheet is organised includes the presentation of two types of data: the volumetric one showing the volume of the samples collected in the F fractions (see Column B) and the abundance quantities of all micro-findings (see Columns C-L). In addition, the abundance numbers were coded according to different presence concentrations. On the contrary, the absence was also recorded with the given value “0”. Regarding the abundance quantitative diameters, the coding consists of labelling items counting from 1 to 10 with a given value of “1”; items counting from 11 to 20 – with a given value of “2”; items counting from 21 to 50 – with a given value of “3” and items outnumbering 51 – with given value of “4”. The provided above metric values should be treated as relative and reflecting the concentrations of micro-findings per sample. These cannot be used as absolute values.
