Description

The data presented here complements our publication "Crop residues may be a key feedstock to bioeconomy but how reliable are current estimation methods?". The dataset contains processed data on crop residue estimates for 17 crops at the French departmental level. The raw data on crop production and surface area was procured from Agreste (Official French agricultural statistics). The description of the datasets is highlighted below: SM1A: This contains 19 years (2000 - 2018) of data on crop production and surface area for 17 crops and the estimated residues using different functions. More details on the functions used can be obtained from Karan and Hamelin (2021). The data is also synthesized to report the theoretical energy potential of these residues at the French departmental and regional level. The theoretical potential is presented in terms of both minimum and maximum values obtained using different estimation functions. SM2A: This contains data and results on 3 statistical tests performed on wheat to evaluate the magnitude of eventual differences in crop residue (CR) estimates resulting from the use of the most commonly reported functions for CR estimation. For further details please see Karan and Hamelin (2021). SM3A: This contains an example sheet for estimating residue from wheat cereal (straw) at the French departmental level using different estimation functions. The data on crop production and surface area can be replaced by other data to get wheat residue yield for other areas. Reference: Karan, SK and Hamelin, L. (2021).
