Datasets Comparison
Version 1
A dataset of the distribution of aflatoxin-producing fungi in Japan
Description
The dataset comprises georeferenced records of aflatoxin (AF)-producing fungi distribution across 33 of Japan’s 47 prefectures, compiled through a systematic literature review using sources such as Web of Science, CiNii Research, J-STAGE, AgriKnowledge, and the NARO Genebank. It focuses on fungi of the genus Aspergillus known for producing AF—a genotoxic and carcinogenic mycotoxin—and is intended to support research on how climate change may be influencing the spread of these fungi in Japan. The dataset serves as a valuable resource for meta-analyses and risk assessments related to AF contamination under changing environmental conditions.
Steps to reproduce
The dataset was created through a systematic literature search using five major databases—Web of Science, CiNii Research, J-STAGE, AgriKnowledge, and the NARO Genebank Database—which include peer-reviewed journals and bulletins from Japanese agricultural research institutions. Search terms combined the fungal genus Aspergillus, the mycotoxin aflatoxin, and keywords related to distribution, contamination, and Japan, using both English and Japanese spellings.
Initial searches conducted between June 2023 and January 2024 yielded 450 articles, which were screened for duplicates and relevance, resulting in 25 eligible studies. An additional 14 relevant studies were identified by reviewing the references of these papers. After removing overlaps based on shared samples, a final set of 21 studies was selected, from which 137 distribution records were compiled.
Geographic site information was extracted directly from texts or interpreted from maps using Google Maps. For each site, historical climate data (10-year averages of temperature and precipitation) were obtained from the nearest AMeDAS stations operated by the Japan Meteorological Agency.
