Romanticized harm: Masculinity and male partner violence in Spanish-language teen/YA Wattpad romance

This repository contains two datasets supporting the quantitative content analysis reported in the above article. Both datasets were generated from a corpus of Spanish-language heterosexual teen/YA romance novels collected from Wattpad between October and November 2025. Wattpad_SpanishYARomance_NovelLevel_Dataset.sav contains novel-level data for the full corpus of 362 Wattpad novels. Variables include platform-level metadata (reads, likes, engagement rate), completion status, and predominant modal categories for violence type, masculinity type, and romanticization, calculated from scene-level coding of the female-authored subset. Wattpad_SpanishYARomance_SceneLevel_Dataset.sav contains scene-level data for the 1,478 coded instances drawn from 76 completed female-authored novels, including the analytical subsample of 1,130 instances in which a male romantic protagonist exercises violence against a female character within an intimate relationship. Variables include violence type, masculinity type, romanticization, aggressor age, and aggressor social status relative to the female character. All novels were anonymized prior to coding. Each work was assigned an alphanumeric identifier replacing the original title and author username. No identifiable author information is included in either dataset. Data collection and anonymization procedures followed the BSA Ethics Guidelines for Digital Research (British Sociological Association, 2017).
