Description

It was realized simulation of radiocarbon 14C creation in the atmosphere at thunderstorm conditions for the altitudes up to 15 km above the sea level. The simulation was done by means the proposed gross model which takes into account the rate of 14C production depending on the part of energetic electrons in the flash discharge for different altitudes above the sea level. Basing on the nuclear data it was calculated the probability of 14C creation depending on the neutron energy at radiocarbon production. The results revealed that yield of thunderstorm mechanism to the total radiocarbon creation is very small compare to the main one – originated from the cosmic irradiation. The data on thunderstorm neutron flux which reaches the ground level are presented.

Steps to reproduce

Simulation of the transport for particles produced by energetic electrons (with indicated spectrum) in the atmosphere. Calculation of radiocarbon 14C generation in 14N(n,p)14C reaction (taking into account the nuclear concentration of all atmospheric isotopes and neutron flux for the considered cell at the given altitudes, accounting the flux of energetic electrons in the total electron flux).
