Description

Abstract A program is presented that computes the Cherenkov counting efficiency for β-particle-emitting nuclides counted in commercial liquid-scintillation spectrometers. The detection probability function for the Cherenkov light is derived experimentally for standards of ^(36)Cl and ^(32)P, and integrated over the energy interval between the Cherenkov threshold and the end-point of the β-particle distribution. We emphasize the importance of the shape factor forms in the computation of the countin... Title of program: CHEREN Catalogue Id: ADIE_v1_0 Nature of problem Although the commercial liquid-scintillation counters are efficient Cherenkov light detectors, experimentalists commonly prefer to apply liquid scintillators, because the detection efficiency is always higher. However, Cherenkov counting techniques may be comparatively advantageous in certain situations in which the use of a liquid scintillation cocktail is not feasible. In particular, the ability to recover the radioactive sample unaltered, and the possibility to enhance the total volume of rad ...
