Description

This dataset is used to retrieve soil moisture information using observations from an L-band passive microwave radiometer for two typical road construction materials, sand subgrade and Unbound Granular Material (UGM) subbase/ base. This dataset includes: - Observed brightness temperatures (TB) from the L-band radiometer. - Recorded soil moisture and temperature from Stevens HydraProbe soil moisture sensors and temperature sensors. - Measured surface height from laser profiler. - Measured soil moisture from traditional methods: The thermogravimetric ring for sand and Nuclear Density Gauge (NDG) for UGM. These data can be used as input to a Passive Microwave Emission Model to retrieve soil moisture information. L-band radiometer was used to provide observed TB from the soil surface at different incidence angles, a laser profiler provided the roughness information, and Stevens HydraProbe soil moisture sensors and temperature sensors were used to obtain the vertical distribution of the soil temperature. These parameters together with soil texture, bulk density information, and a first guess of soil moisture were used as input to the forward model to predict the soil surface TB. The best estimate of soil moisture was then inverted using an iterative method to minimize a cost function (CF) calculated from the differences between observed and simulated TB. The Dobson dielectric mixing model was adopted for the sand subgrade and UGM subbase/ base. The moisture content of the soil was measured using the traditional technique at targeted locations to validate results from the model.
