The following chart details the experiences of patients with IBD on concurrent Isotretinoin therapy for Acne. Patients' flaring of IBD was documented to determine risk of IBD flaring while on Isotretinoin therapy.

Steps to reproduce
ICD code and natural-language queries were used to identify patients diagnosed with IBD (e.g. ulcerative colitis (UC), Crohn’s disease (CD) or both/overlap) and treated with isotretinoin from 01/2006-01/2020 at Mass General Brigham (MGB) Hospitals. Individual records were reviewed for an IBD diagnosis (e.g. documented history, gastroenterologist evaluation) and isotretinoin treatment for acne (e.g. documented history, dermatologist evaluation) after an IBD diagnosis had been made. Data collected included patient demographics, occurrence of IBD flare (e.g. gastroenterologist documentation or IBD treatment changes3), and concurrent IBD therapy (e.g., corticosteroids, biologics, aminosalicylates, mercaptopurine, other). Severity of disease and degree of antecedent management of IBD was determined via evaluation of flaring two years preceding isotretinoin initiation. Patients were considered to have flared due to isotretinoin treatment if the IBD flare occurred during or up to 3 months following course completion. MGB IRB approved this study.
