Description

This document provides the species- and sex-specific macro-histological reference atlas associated with the protocol Protocol for histology-anchored macroscopic staging of gonadal maturity in exploited fishes. It combines macroscopic gonad images, histological overview images, diagnostic cellular features, maturity-stage descriptors, and the corresponding legends for 13 exploited fish species (Pagellus bogaraveo, Trachurus picturatus, Helicolenus dactylopterus, Pagrus pagrus, Conger conger, Beryx decadactylus, Beryx splendens, Sparisoma cretense, Lepidopus caudatus, Scomber colias, Mora moro, Aphanopus carbo, and Raja clavata). The atlas is intended for observer training, calibration, documentation, and comparison with locally collected material. It does not replace histological validation of species-, sex-, and population-specific macroscopic descriptors. Users applying the atlas to new populations or additional taxa should confirm that the macroscopic and histological features are consistent with the reproductive biology and sampling context of the target population.
