Data for: What determines export specialization in primary products and resource-based manufactures? Evidence from the Alliance of Sahel States
Description
This dataset contains the data used for the empirical analysis of export specialization in primary products and resource-based manufactures in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger over the period 1996–2023. The analysis is based on revealed comparative advantage indices and a set of economic, institutional, infrastructure, human capital, foreign direct investment, population, and trade cost variables. The underlying data are compiled from UNCTADstat, the World Development Indicators, the Worldwide Governance Indicators, and the ESCAP–World Bank Trade Cost Database.

Steps to reproduce
Download the relevant annual data for Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger for the period 1996–2023 from UNCTADstat, the World Development Indicators (World Bank), the Worldwide Governance Indicators (World Bank), and the ESCAP–World Bank Trade Cost Database. Harmonize the country identifiers, years, variable definitions, units of measurement, and missing-value codes across the different data sources. Construct the revealed comparative advantage (RCA) indices for primary products and resource-based manufactures using the Lall (2000) technological classification and the Balassa (1965) index. Merge the RCA indicators with the explanatory variables to obtain the final country-year panel dataset for the three Alliance of Sahel States countries over 1996–2023. Conduct the preliminary econometric diagnostics, including tests for cross-sectional dependence, panel unit roots, cointegration, and slope homogeneity. Estimate the long-run relationships using the cross-sectionally augmented error-correction model (CS-ECM), accounting for cross-sectional dependence and unobserved common factors. Re-estimate the models using the dynamic common correlated effects (DCCE) estimator as a robustness check. Compare the baseline and robustness results for primary-product specialization and resource-based-manufactures specialization. The accompanying Stata do-file provides the commands required to reproduce the data preparation, variable construction, diagnostic tests, baseline estimations, and robustness analysis.
