Description

This dataset contains a comprehensive collection of instances of Jugaad in architecture, focusing on innovative and resourceful construction solutions developed by individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds. It includes interviews with practitioners (referred to as Jugaadu) who have employed these creative, cost-effective strategies to address various architectural challenges. The interviews explore the personal experiences, motivations, and strategies of individuals as they navigate financial, environmental, and spatial constraints in their living environments. The dataset features a thematic analysis of each interview, categorizing the responses into key themes that reflect the triggers, mediators, and consequences of Jugaad in architecture. The triggers highlight the factors that motivate individuals to seek alternative solutions, such as economic limitations, environmental conditions, and practical needs. The mediators describe the resources, skills, and social networks that facilitate the implementation of Jugaad, including the use of available materials, local expertise, and community support. Finally, the consequences section examines the outcomes of these solutions, focusing on the benefits and challenges experienced by the practitioners, including cost savings, functional improvements, and potential durability concerns. Additionally, the dataset includes a consolidated table that combines the thematic analysis, providing a clear and structured overview of the key patterns and relationships observed across all interviews. This data is invaluable for understanding the role of Jugaad in shaping sustainable and adaptive architecture, particularly in resource-constrained settings, and for further research on informal innovation and low-cost building practices.
