Description

- v2 has been updated to reflect an update in the GWTC2 to fill missing data points. The Warm/Cool Index (WCI) and the Global Extremes Index (GEI) are two climate indicators based upon air masses - multivariate weather situations (like, for example, hot and humid, or cold and dry) near Earth's surface. Both the WCI and GEI are based upon the gridded weather typing classification, version 2 (GWTC2). The GWTC2 can be cited using these two references: Lee, C.C., 2019. The gridded weather typing classification version 2: A global‐scale expansion. International Journal of Climatology. DOI: 10.1002/JOC.6263 Lee, Cameron (2020), “GWTC2 Dataset - A global-scale classification of air masses”, Mendeley Data, V2, doi: 10.17632/gbwwksnd6j.2 (http://dx.doi.org/10.17632/gbwwksnd6j.2). Also, more GWTC2 information can be found here: http://www.personal.kent.edu/~cclee/gwtc2global.html. For WCI - Higher values indicate a greater expanse of Earth's surface area covered by the hot GWTC2 air masses (HW, DW, W), relative to the cold GWTC2 air masses (HC, DC, C). Lower values are opposite. Index has been robustly standardized (using medians and IQRs) to the 1981-2010 period. For GEI - Higher values indicate a greater expanse of Earth's surface area covered by the 'extreme' GWTC2 air masses (HC, HW, DC, DW). Lower values indicate less coverage of these air masses. Index has been robustly standardized (using medians and IQRs) to the 1981-2010 period. DW - Dry Warm; HW - Humid Warm; W - Warm; C - Cool; HC - Humid Cool; DC - Dry Cool. The file below is in Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) format. There are three tabs: monthly - which is the month-by-month time series of averaged values of the daily-scale WCI and GEI, 1979-2018. daily - which is the daily-scale time series of the WCI and GEI (daily is the native temporal scale), 1979-2018 metadata - information about the data As of publication of this dataset, the research article describing it will soon be undergoing peer-review: Lee, C.C.
