Description

Herein, we provide the Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy - EDS (multispot and mapping) data pertaining to the alpheid shrimp (family Alpheidae) remains (fingertips) recovered from the early Miocene (Aquitanian) Khari Nadi Formation (Kutch Basin, western India). In addition, data on chemical concentration (based on X-Ray Fluorescence - XRF analyses) of host (alpheid-yielding) and associated lithologies has been provided. Further, a table summarizes the global distribution (during the Paleogene-Neogene interval) of fossil alpheid claw fingertips records.

Steps to reproduce

The Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy utilized for accessing the elemental composition of fossil specimens (particularly the alpheid claw fingertips) involved both multiple spots and mapping techniques using the EDAX (Model: Octane Plus with TEAM software version V4.2.1) facility at Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP), Lucknow, India. The host (containing coprolite specimens) and associated lithologies (i.e., a total of three samples: KOT-1, KOT-2 and KOT-3) were analyzed for the presence and quantification of major oxides using Wavelength Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (WD-XRF) Spectrometer (Model: PANalytical, axios max, 4 KW) at BSIP. Prior to the WD-XRF analysis, the samples were powdered (up to ~ 300 mesh of ASTM standard) with the help of an agate mortar pestle. Subsequently, with the usage of boric acid as a binder, pressed pellets were formed of the powdered specimens. Further, the individual samples were analyzed using the omnion standardless analysis software that provides semi-quantitative but versatile (as it includes normalization factor for undetected sample matrix) results.
