The list of all unique foods available from the three USDA Foods programs for households (i.e., TEFAP, FDPIR, and CSFP) (N=152) for fiscal year 2022 (October 1, 2021, to September 30, 2022) was obtained through the USDA website. The nutritional information for each food was obtained using the following sources: USDA’s “Product specifications and requirements”; USDA’s Food Data Central (FDC); USDA Food in Schools Product Information Sheets; USDA “Purchase Award Description reports” (PCA) for the fiscal years 2020-20225 to identify vendors; vendor’s website; USDA’s FDC SR Legacy and Global Branded Food Products databases; websites of retailers; food banks; food pantry; or USDA Food and Nutrition Service. The foods available from USDA Foods programs for households were ranked using the Healthy Eating Research (HER) Guidelines for the Charitable Food System. Foods were categorized into a three-tiered system (i.e., choose often/green; choose sometimes/yellow; choose rarely/red) based on levels of saturated fat, sodium, and added sugar per serving, and presence of whole grains.
