Articles were accessed from PubMed/Medline, Embase (Ovid) and Cochrane Library until May 30, 2022. For both ‘COVID-19’ and ‘complement’ was searched with controlled vocabulary such as MeSH terms and related free text words were searched in title/abstract and keywords. The search strategy is uploaded. The articles were screened by title and abstract using Rayyan by three independent reviewers. The full text of eligible articles was then assessed by two independent reviewers. Of articles that were included, the reference lists were manually checked for eligible articles. Histopathological studies, multiomics, observational and clinical interventional studies investigating complement activation in COVID-19 patients were included. For human studies, the inclusion criteria were an age of 16 or older, presumed or diagnoses SARS-CoV-2 infection and complement measurements or clinical studies targeting the complement system. Exclusion criteria were case reports or case studies with less than four patients, abstracts or articles of which the full-text was not available and language was restricted to English. Observational and clinical interventional studies in specific subpopulations were excluded as well. The data of these studies was extracted by two independent reviewers into pre-defined extraction forms, describing the characteristics of the studies, study design or methods, various (clinical) outcomes and key findings. Pre-defined extraction forms were prepared in order to extract the data. A separate table was prepared for each study category, describing characteristics of each study, study design or methods, different (clinical) outcomes and key findings. Articles could be included in several categories.
