Description

In this study, twenty live specimens of the signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana) from Lake Tahoe, California, were used to obtain fresh isolates of A. astaci. As a result, 35 axenic cultures of A. astaci were obtained, as well as isolates of two apparently undescribed Aphanomyces sp. lineages. The obtained A. astaci isolates were 100 % identical to the isolates of A. astaci B-haplogroup commonly detected in Europe, and infection experiments confirmed their high virulence towards noble crayfish. One of the undescribed Aphanomyces lineages was highly similar to Aphanomyces detected previously in crustacean zooplankton (Daphnia sp.) in Central Europe, while the other lineage was distinct, most closely related (ITS sequence similarity of 93%) to either A. astaci or Aphanomyces spp. SH-2018a isolated from Astacus astacus in Finland. Neither of the Aphanomyces spp. caused crayfish mortality under experimental conditions.
