Dataset of public stereotypes on recycled water use through event-related potential(ERP)

Description

This event-related potential experiment on public acceptance of recycled water use was conducted in the Laboratory of Neuromanagement in Engineering of Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology. 37 participants were recruited to participate in the EEG experiment, including 18 males and 19 females. A preprocess of the EEG data was conducted, and 5 invalid samples were eliminated due to the limited number of or invalid marks they presented. Finally, 32 valid samples were kept for analysis. Curry 8 was used to extract the analysis time windows in the EEG and to superimpose and average the N400 waveforms of different experimental participants induced by different stimuli, and to derive the average N400 brain potential waveform amplitude. In this dataset, the more negative the amplitude of N400, the stronger the negative stereotype on recycled water reuse is presented.

Steps to reproduce

Many studies used traditional self-reporting method to collect data with participants, which may not serve the best in terms of accurately measuring their perception (Hou et al., 2021). Since ERP technique can identify the physiological responses of experimental participants, their implicit perception can be captured and analyzed through a measurement of participants’ N400 components. Scholars who study the public acceptance of recycled water can obtain a more real public attitude than questionnaire survey through these data. These data can be more grouped to find the influencing factors of public attitude towards recycled water reuse.
