EEG and psychological assessment datasets: Neurofeeedback for the treatment of PTSD

Description

Psychological assessments were conducted through clinical interviews, to collect psychometric data for twenty-nine female survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, before and after an intervention aimed at reducing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptom severity. Three measures of trauma and four measures of wellbeing were assessed using empirically validated standardised assessments. The participants were assigned to a control group (n = 9), a motor-imagery group (MI, n = 10), and a neurofeedback group (NF, n = 10). Participants in the latter two groups received a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) based training as a treatment intervention over a period of two weeks between the pre- and post- clinical interviews. The training involved presenting feedback visually via a game, based on real-time analysis of the EEG recorded data during the BCI-based treatment session. Participants were asked to regulate (NF) or intentionally modulate (MI) brain activity to affect/control the game.

Steps to reproduce

Data were acquired as follows: EEG data: 1. g.Nautilus Pro, 32-channel active electrodes wearable headset . 2. gNautilus Ladybird, 32 channel active electrode wearable headset. 3. FlexEEG, 8 channel active electrode EEG headset – 3 bipolar channels and 5 mono-polar channels. A user datagram protocol (UDP) based communication was used to manage the communication between a Simulink module, used for EEG data acquisition and online signal processing, and the experimental protocol controller application in Unity 3D Game Engine. The NeuroSensi games platform was used to cue the NF and MI tasks. Psychological assessment data: An interviewer recorded participant responses to the following series of standardised mental health tests, pre- and post- NF and MI training: 1. PTSD Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (5th edition - DSM-5) check list (PCL-5, 20-item self-report measure. 2. Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (HTQ, 40-item self-report measure). 3. Primary care PTSD screen for DSM-5 (5-item self-report PTSD Screen). 4. Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS, 14-item self-report measure). 5. Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC, 10-item self-report measure). 6. Brief Resilience Scales (BRS, 6-item self-report measure). 7. General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE, 10-item self-report measure). A questionnaire was completed by participants in the MI and NF training groups, before and after each training session – to record their subjective measures of stress and mood.
