PSYCHOMETRIC PROPERTIES OF THE ITALIAN PERCEIVED INVALIDATION OF EMOTION SCALE (IT-PIES)
Description
This study aimed to validate the PIES into Italian (IT-PIES) and explore its psychometric properties. We used Sample 1 for Explorative factor analysis in general population of adolescents and emerging adults (group=1). Participants of Sample 1 completed IT-PIES. We used Sample 2 for Confermative factorial analysis, internal consistency and concurrent validity in general population of adolescents and emerging adults (group=1). Participants of Sample 2 completed IT-PIES and measures of psychopathology (YSR), life satisfaction (SWLS), emotional dysregulation (DERS), psychological inflexibility (I-AFQ-Y8), and perceived social support (MSPSS) to explore the concurrent validity. The results supported the IT-PIES one-factor structure, internal consistency, and concurrent validity. We used Sample 3 to explore the differences in IT-PIES in a clinical sample of adolescents with a psychiatric diagnosis (group=2) compared to a general population sample of adolescents (control; group=1). Participants of Sample 3 completed IT-PIES. Psychiatric group reported higher IT-PIES scores than control group (t(118) = 4.723, p = .032; Cohen’s d = .401; CI 95%: .035 – .766). We used Sample 4 to explore the differences in IT-PIES in a sample of young adults with cardiac diagnosis (group=2) when compared to a general population sample (control; group=1). Participants of Sample 4 completed IT-PIES. No difference was found between the cardiac and control group (t(118) = 1.303, p = .195, Cohen’s d = .239; CI 95%: -.122 – .599), indicating that emotional invalidation is similar in these samples.
