IoTMonitor-WQ: A Remote water-quality monitoring IoT platform

Water quality is determined by evaluating a set of physical, chemical, and biological characteristics in surface water sources or tributaries. The monitoring of variables such as pH, electrical conductivity, and dissolved oxygen allows establishing the quality of water for human consumption. However, it is currently only possible to obtain this information at points distant from water sources or tributaries by collecting samples in the field (in situ). Field testing costs are high and require important investment in logistics and time. For this reason, we built a low-cost microcontroller-based IoT platform for monitoring water quality parameters named IoT-Monitor-to-Water-Quality (IoTMonitor-WQ). This platform is built with precision sensors, LoRa technology, and an energy autonomy module. We demonstrate with IoTMonitor-WQ an effective technological solution in sampling, data storage and transmission, and subsequent evaluation of relevant data influencing water quality in remote locations.
