Description

This work will analyze the Polypropylene´s behavior in the vehicle dashboard, this is an original material used by Ford Motor Company, and will be compared against the behavior of poly-lactic acid (PLA) which this study shows provides a better response to the knees impact against the dashboard, in addition to being a biopolymer the ecological impact is less than the synthetic polymers.

Steps to reproduce

To be able to perform the analysis, it was necessary to know the force with which the driver's knees hit the dashboard, for this data was owned by the sensors of the test carried out by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were used. The test was carried out using a frontal impact of the vehicle against a retaining wall at a speed of 56.3 km/h, two cameras were recorded in real-time, and fourteen high-speed cameras documented the test. Subsequently, a dummy with triaxial head, thorax, and pelvis accelerometers, displacement potentiometers, neck transducers, load cells in the right and left femur, and load sensors in the seat belt, both in the lap and in the shoulder, was fitted out. to measure torso accelerations and pelvic section loading. The sensors provided the force with which the test dummy impacted the panel, which was 5666.1 N
