Aedes aegypti Egg Image Data Set
Description
The Mosqlimate Aedes aegypti Egg Image Dataset comprises 700 high-quality JPEG images meticulously curated to provide a comprehensive view of pallets housing Aedes aegypti eggs. This dataset, generated through a collaboration between the Mosqlimate group and the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz Entomology Laboratory, aims to address the pressing need for improved methods to monitor and control Aedes aegypti populations, which are vectors for diseases such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. We believe that this dataset will serve as a foundational resource for researchers in entomology, epidemiology, computer science, and public health, facilitating advancements in automated surveillance and control strategies. It also holds potential for educational purposes, aiding in the teaching of image analysis, computer vision, and technology application in public health.

Steps to reproduce
Images of pallets containing Aedes aegypti eggs were captured using various cellphones equipped with standard camera functionalities. The images were taken under controlled conditions to ensure consistent lighting and framing. After capturing the images with cellphones, the pallets were transferred to a laboratory where they were placed under a microscope. A trained technician manually counted the Aedes aegypti eggs visible in each image using standard microscopy protocols. Alongside the images, metadata such as the number of eggs, cellphone make/model, and image resolution were recorded in a CSV file named dataset.csv.
