Description

Abstract Study objective: To compare the effects of dienogest and combined oral contraceptive (COC) pills after laparoscopic conservative surgery on pain, quality of life (QOL), and recurrence of endometrioma in women with endometriosis. Design: Prospective randomized clinical trial study. Setting: Academic tertiary referral center. Patients: Women with endometriosis confirmed by surgery from April 2016 to June 2018. Interventions: Eighty patients who had undergone operative laparoscopy received dienogest or COC pills daily for six months. Measurements and Main Results: Treatment with dienogest was associated with improved self-reported of all types of pelvic pain and QOL after 6 months of treatment (P < 0.05). Improvement of these parameters was also observed in COC groups (P < 0.05), except for dyspareunia (p=0.089). Both of these pills significantly improved the scores of QOL and sexual function, but no remarkable differences were detected between the two groups in this regard (P < 0.05). About recurrence of endometrioma, there were no differences between dienogest and COC users (p=0.1). Conclusion: Postoperative administration of dienogest or COC pills after operative laparoscopy reduced pain and improved QOL in women with endometriosis. So, the choice of regimen can be adjusted according to the patientʼs symptoms, needs, and preferences.
