Steps to reproduce

Tree species and size (diameter at breast height (DBH)) were recorded for each standing tree individual within each plot. All standing deadwood individuals and the length of lying deadwood were measured to calculate deadwood volume within the plots. The density of understory – including shrub and regeneration layer – was estimated by counting the stems of tall (DBH < 5 cm, height > 130 cm) and short (DBH < 5 cm, 130 cm > height > 50 cm) woody individuals in 12.57 m2 and 0.5 m2 circles, respectively in 81 gridpoints of a virtual 10 m × 10 m network dividing each plot. Canopy closure was estimated in % in every second grid point (41 points) using a spherical densiometer. Bryophyte and lichen sampling was carried out 3 years after interventions on three substrate types on each plot: standing trees, lying deadwood and forest floor. For sampling standing trees, 40 individuals (DBH > 20 cm) were selected on each plot by stratified random sampling. Bryophyte and lichen species were recorded on 640 trees from the bottom up to 1.5 m. Sampling on lying deadwood was conducted in a line-intercept sampling along three 40 m long and 2 m wide transects (0°, 120° and 240° directions. Bryophyte and lichen species were recorded on the forest floor on fallen twigs and branches, rocky outcrops and soil within a 0.5 m2 circular area/unit in the same 41 sampling points in the square grid pattern where canopy closure estimation was conducted.
