Description

Summary of plant species regarded as important as reported by the residents of Community Baboon Sanctuary (CBS), Belize through in person, semi-structured interviews conducted from 2014 to 2015. Thirty-five local residents participated and named 52 species of importance. Use Value (UV) and Importance Value (IV) were calculated. We calculated Species UV using the equation, UVis = (∑ Uis) / (nis) UVis = Species Use Value for each plant mentioned by community member Uis = ∑ of total benefits mentioned by all community members for individual plant species nis = Total number of plants mentioned as important in all surveys Importance Value (Byg & Balslev 2001) focuses on human values measuring the proportion of community members who regard a plant species as most important. Importance Values (IV) range between 0 and 1 and are calculated using the equation, IVs = nis / n IVs = Importance Value for each plant mentioned by community member nis = Number of community members consider species important n = Total number of community members interviewed
