Baseline dependence of cardiorespiratory reactivity to paced breathing

Cardiorespiratory and autonomic variables recorded by spiroarteriocardiorhythmography during spontaneous respiration at rest and during two paced-breathing manoeuvres — 0.1 Hz (six breaths per minute) and 0.25 Hz (fifteen breaths per minute) — in two independent male cohorts: 183 athletes classified into four types of heart-rate regulation, and 52 cadets examined twice, four months apart. For every participant the dataset gives the resting value of each parameter together with the increment produced by each manoeuvre, in absolute units and as a percentage of baseline. These are the quantities on which the law of initial values is tested: 8 parameter x manoeuvre combinations in the athlete cohort and 64 in the cadet cohort. Cohort B covers 32 parameters — heart rate, QTc, spectral power in the VLF, LF and HF bands for heart-rate, blood-pressure and respiratory variability, tidal volume, oxygen uptake and eight impedance-derived haemodynamic variables. Cohort A covers baroreflex sensitivity in the LF and HF bands, the Hildebrandt index and the circulation-ventilation ratio. The deposit also contains the complete analysis code and every derived table reported in the related article: the correlated-variance test of Geenen and van de Vijver (1993) with false-discovery-rate control, the conventional slope test with its reverse regression, cluster-bootstrap confidence intervals for the repeated-measures cohort, linearity checks, ANCOVA with the homogeneity-of-regression-slopes test, and a reclassification analysis comparing pooled against baseline-tertile reference limits. A verification script reproduces every published statistic from the deposited de-identified tables to floating-point precision. Direct identifiers were removed before deposit and each participant assigned a pseudonymous code; the original records are available from the author on reasonable request under a data-sharing agreement.
