Anatomy of the largest (ca. 291 km3) eruption of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, the Xáltipan ignimbrite from Los Humeros Volcanic Complex, Mexico; implications for greater geothermal conditions. Dataset.
Description
An important part of this work is to present a re-evaluation of the volume and magnitude of the Xáltipan ignimbrite, the leading pyroclastic unit and eruption of Los Humeros Volcanic Complex (LHVC). As part of the methodology, and in order to calculate the DRE correction factor, and the magnitude in terms of mass, we measured the density of the ignimbrite in its different welding grades (I-VI, according to Quane and Russel, 2005), and the magmatic material density. The data here presented consist of two worksheets: Worksheet 1) Density of the non-consolidates samples: This worksheet shows the followed methodology and calculations to determine the density of the non-consolidated magmatic material and the proportion of the lithic content. For this, we randomly selected a portion of the sample, weighted it in a high precision bascule, and them submerged it into a test tube. The process was repeated in a lithic-free sample. From this, we could obtain a mean value for components proportion and lithics and magmatic material. Worksheet 2) Density of the magmatic components of the consolidated samples. In this worksheet, we calculated the density of the magmatic material in the consolidated (due welding) samples by integrating thin-section, He-pycnometry, and microCT analysis. First, we determined porosity and whole rock grain density with He-pycnometry analysis. Then the same samples were analyzed with micro-CT to determine the lithic content. With this information, and using the lithic density value of 2(calculated in worksheet 1), we could calculate the magmatic material density (weighted) for each sample, and that resulted in a mean value of 2.35 gr/cm3. Finally, using the pore fraction we could determine the density of the highly welded samples (2.2 gr/cm3), which is key in calculating the DRE.
