The dataset was obtained by investigating thermophilic bacteria, Thermoanaerobacter pseudethanolicus. While working with thermophilic bacteria within the genera of Thermoanaerobacter and Caldanaerobacter with focus on amino acid metabolism we observed that these bacteria can degrade the branched-chain amino acids when supplemented with thiosulfate as electron acceptor. During growth on leucine, isoleucine, and valine in presence of thiosulfate the strains produced a mixture of their corresponding fatty acids and alcohols. The formation of the fatty acid was always high under different electron scavenging conditions. The highest amounts of 2-methyl-1-butanol from isoleucine were at pH 6.5, liquid-gas phase of 0.98, and at 20 mM thiosulfate concentration. A kinetic experiment of the branched-chain amino acids were done in the presence of thiosulfate were performed. Finally, a NMR study using radiolabelled 13C1 methyl-1-butyrate during degradation of leucine in the presence of thiosulfate, was done to prove that the 13C1-methyl-1-butanol was indeed from its corresponding branched-chain fatty acid.
