Description

The Law of Intelligence: A First Principle for Resolution, Coherence, and Generation — Don L. Gaconnet, LifePillar Institute for Recursive Sciences This paper proposes the Law of Intelligence as a universal first principle: intelligence is the structural capacity of identity to resolve coupling into coherence. Intelligence is not selection, not computation, not awareness. It is resolution — the structural property by which coupling produces coherent identity rather than structural contradiction. The law is formalized through three axioms: (1) Resolution — every coupling event resolves into a coherent identity, and this resolution is intelligence; (2) Co-extensiveness — intelligence is co-extensive with identity, present wherever identity exists, not an emergent property of complex systems; (3) Scale Invariance — intelligence operates identically at every scale from quantum transitions to cosmological structure formation. The law is demonstrated across twenty-seven systems spanning seven scales of physical reality — subatomic, atomic/chemical, biological, cognitive, relational, cosmological, and computational — without exception. Representative systems include quark confinement, radioactive decay, quantum measurement, chemical bonding, crystal lattice formation, cell membrane selectivity, natural selection, DNA error correction, synaptic integration, perception, identity formation, understanding, conversation, symmetry breaking, stellar fusion, and large language model inference. The Law of Intelligence completes a triad of first principles: the Law of Identity (Gaconnet, 2026) establishes the ground state of existence; the Law of Recursion (Gaconnet, 2026) establishes the mechanism of exchange; the Law of Intelligence establishes the capacity by which exchange produces coherent structure. The empirical anchor is provided by Identity Collapse Therapy (Gaconnet, 2025), which demonstrates that intelligence — resolution capacity — persists through structural identity termination. Any framework claiming to study "recursive intelligence" without structurally distinguishing intelligence from recursion operates on a category error. Intelligence is the capacity. Recursion is the mechanism. They are co-operative but structurally distinct. Author: Don L. STEP 1: UNDERSTAND THE THREE AXIOMS Axiom 1 — Resolution: Every coupling event resolves into a coherent identity. This resolution is intelligence. Axiom 2 — Co-extensiveness: Intelligence is co-extensive with identity. Wherever identity exists, resolution capacity exists. Intelligence is not emergent. Axiom 3 — Scale Invariance: Intelligence operates identically at every scale — quantum, chemical, biological, cognitive, relational, cosmological, computational. STEP 2: SELECT A COUPLING EVENT AT ANY SCALE Choose any system where two identities meet across a boundary. Tested systems include: quark confinement, radioactive decay, quantum measurement, hydrogen formation, covalent bonding, crystal lattice formation, phase transitions, cell membrane selectivity, DNA replication, synaptic transmission, immune recognition, natural selection, perception, identity formation, understanding, conversation, conflict resolution, symmetry breaking, stellar fusion, black hole singularity, heat death, LLM token generation, thermostat. STEP 3: MAP THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS For your system identify: (a) Two identities involved. (b) Boundary across which coupling occurs. (c) Resolution — the coherent identity that emerges. (d) Intelligence — the capacity by which coupling resolved into coherence rather than contradiction. STEP 4: TEST EACH AXIOM Axiom 1: Did coupling resolve into coherent identity? If permanent irreducible incoherence is found — falsified. Axiom 2: Did identities possess resolution capacity prior to coupling? If identity exists without any resolution capacity — falsified. Axiom 3: Is resolution structurally the same across scales? If structurally incommensurable — falsified. STEP 5: VERIFY THE TRIAD Three distinct properties operated: Identity — the condition (Law of Identity). Recursion — the process (Law of Recursion). Intelligence — the capacity (Law of Intelligence). ICT proves intelligence survives identity termination — intelligence is the capacity, not the product. EXPECTED RESULT: The law holds across all 27 systems at 7 scales without exception.
