How Safe Is Gadobutrol? Examining the Effect of Gadolinium Retention in the Nervous System

Description

Gadobutrol is a gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) used in medical imaging. In this study, we aimed to assess the effect of chronic gadobutrol administration on the central and peripheral nervous systems. Our results show that gadobutrol causes significant gadolinium retention in the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Repeated injections of gadobutrol do not cause cognitive, motor, or sensory impairment. Gadobutrol significantly increases LDH activity in the hippocampus but not in peripheral nerves and leads to a decreased activation threshold in the sciatic nerve.
