Description

This dataset contains information used for the quantitative estimation of flood risk along the Niger River upstream of the city of Niamey, Niger. The data was collected as part of the SLAPIS Project through field surveys, interviews with farmers and processing of data extracted from satellite images. The dataset includes three folders: 1. Agriculture: This folder includes (i) land cover classes for rice in irrigated perimeters, pond rice, horticulture, pumpkins, and sweet potatoes; (ii) sample fields for each land cover class, where the crops and their inundation status were verified on ground as of mid-February 2025. 2. Flood Plain: This folder includes (i) the inundated areas as of August 20, 2024, and February 16, 2025, extracted from Sentinel-2 imagery using the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI); (ii) Ground Control Points of the water edge detected by GPS. 3. Human Settlements: This folder includes (i) the built-up areas of human settlements within a 1 km strip from the Niger Riverbank and within river islands. The information was extracted by visual photointerpretation of very high-resolution satellite image as of February 2024 accessible on Google Earth; (ii) buildings located within the inundated area as of August 20, 2024.
