Description

Chemical control is the available and widely used methods for Spodoptera frugipada (FAW) in Nigeria, but its continuous use threatens food health and brings about environmental contamination. This study aimed to assess insecticide efficacy of vermicompost tea (VCT) from neem compost against FAW and paramecia. The maturation of the compost was monitored using chemical and spectroscopic analytical methods. The results demonstrated that vermicompost at the 45 days was stable, matured and possess low toxicity against ciliates (LC50 32.2 g OC L–1). In the laboratory, the mortality of FAW larvae reached 90–100% within 24 hr and LC50 value was 0.79 g OC L–1. In the field, treatment with VCT resulted in the decrease in a percentage of the damaged maize plants from 76.8% (control) to 9.4% what was comparable to that value for EB treated plants (0.8%). We concluded that neem-based VCT is a bio-insecticide and fertilizer.
