Description

Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) was initiated as a public health intervention for reducing the transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that leads to Acquired Immunodeficiency Virus (AIDS), and cervical cancer. The medical procedure has a target of circumcising 80% of the males between the ages of 15 and 49 years. However, thirteen years down the line that target is still far from being reached with some of the reasons advanced being lack of funds due to donor fatigue. What the extant literature failed to examine was the possibility of the erotophilic-erotophobic attitudes of the target beneficiaries as one of the reasons behind the slow adoption of voluntary male circumcision. This study therefore sought to determine how the levels of erotophilia-erotophobia predicted the adoption of voluntary male circumcision. A convenience sample of 300 respondents was surveyed. An ANOVA test revealed that that there were statistically insignificant age and marital status differences in terms of having erotophilic-erotophobic attitudes, but the differences were significant on circumcision status. A binary logistic regression analysis indicated that erotophilic individuals were more likely to adopt VMMC than their erotophobic counterparts. The study recommended regular pedagogical and andragogical sessions on sex issues in order to instil erotophilic attitudes which promote the adoption of VMMC.
