Visual complexity and concreteness in industrial safety icons: behavioral, pretest and icon-validation data
Description
This dataset supports a 2 × 2 experiment on visual complexity and concreteness in industrial safety icons. It contains 5,031 valid trials from 387 manufacturing workers, pretest summaries for 32 candidate icons, objective structural measurements for 87 reference icons and 52 visual variants, OCI reference parameters, and expert ratings. The Excel workbook contains five worksheets. Each worksheet provides a data table on the left and variable definitions and analysis notes on the right. Higher semantic distance ratings indicate a closer icon–meaning association. Participant identifiers have been replaced and identifying metadata removed.

Steps to reproduce
The study used a 2 × 2 within-subject design manipulating visual complexity and concreteness. Each participant viewed one variant of each of 13 basic safety icons. Import the data tables on the left of the five worksheets. Variable definitions, coding rules and analysis notes are provided on the right. Use participant_id to identify repeated observations and icon_id to identify basic icons. Analyze correct recognition reaction time only for trials with recognition_correct = 1, using its natural logarithm. Recalculate OCI using the transformations, reference means, population standard deviations and weights in OCI_parameters. Pretest data are provided as icon-level summaries.
