Efficacy of Topical Spironolactone in Acne Vulgaris: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Trials
Description
This dataset includes supplementary materials supporting the Brief Report submitted to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD) titled “Efficacy of Topical Spironolactone in Acne Vulgaris: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Trials.” The dataset contains: Subgroup forest plot comparing gel vs cream formulations (Figure 2) Overall forest plot comparing topical spironolactone vs placebo (Figure 1) PRISMA 2020 checklist outlining the study selection process Risk of bias assessment table (ROB)[figures and sheet] Data extraction table summarizing study characteristics and outcomes Full reference list (beyond the 5 cited in the main brief report) Prisma Flowchart These files provide transparency and reproducibility of the meta-analysis findings and allow readers and reviewers to explore detailed methodology, study comparisons, and quality assessments that could not be included in the main manuscript due to space limitations. All included materials align with PRISMA 2020 and ICMJE guidelines.

A comprehensive literature search was conducted across PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect using the keywords: “topical spironolactone,” “acne,” and “randomized controlled trial.” Studies were screened in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials comparing topical spironolactone with placebo. Data on total lesion count (TLC) and adverse events were extracted into a structured spreadsheet. Risk of bias for included studies was assessed using Cochrane RoB 2.0 criteria. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4.1, applying a random-effects model. Subgroup analyses were conducted based on formulation (gel vs cream).
