Description

This dataset contains vibroacoustic recordings of 15 laparoscopic surgical actions acquired in a controlled phantom setup. A vibroacoustic sensor was mounted at the proximal end of a laparoscopic scissor and a bipolar grasping forceps, so that the vibrations conducted along the instrument were recorded outside the phantom, without modifying the instruments. Signals were stored in .wav format at a sampling rate of 16 kHz and a resolution of 18 bits. The actions are organized into three interaction domains: spatial motion, which includes insertion and removal through the trocar and approaching and retracting movements inside the phantom; tool actuation without material contact, which includes opening and closing of both instruments; and gestures, which include palpation and grasping of synthetic tissue, coagulation of ex-vivo porcine liver, and cutting of foam, PTFE tape and cotton thread. Each action was repeated 100 times, resulting in 1500 recorded events, all performed by a single operator under constant experimental conditions. Events were manually annotated and are provided in Sound Event Detection format, with filename, start time, end time and action label. The dataset accompanies the article Laparoscopic Surgical Actions Distinguishability Based on Proximal Vibroacoustic Sensing, where the experimental setup and the analysis are described in detail.
