Description

The Catalogue is a compilation containing 1299 events (Mw≥3.0) that occurred between 08.01.1223 and 31.12.1989 within the Intra-Carpathians Region of Romania. The focal parameters of imported earthquakes have been revised using all primary data collected from the available sources (macroseismic observations, documents, books, private notes, newspapers, etc.). Historical instrumental data are from digitized analogue seismograms and bulletins collected through EuroSeismos and Sismos-Neries 2006-2010 projects. These data have been processed using modern criteria, methods and recalibrated relationships (eg EMS scales, digital techniques, macroseismic location, Mw estimation). The final catalogue contains several newly identified earthquakes. Also, several events from the Romplus catalogue were evaluated as false, being parameterized with a single macroseismic date (Io), in reality, these are intensity data points for strong earthquakes that occurred within neighbouring countries (see Oros 2011; Oros et al. 2021) The events were relocated by i) the MEEP macroseismic method (Musson&Jimenez, 2008) calibrated by Oros et al (2019) and ii) the grid-search technique using the Seisan program and the IASPEI91 velocity model when instrumental data have been available. The macroseismic locations were validated by comparison with those obtained by the BKW method (Bakun&Wentworth, 1997), recently calibrated by Oros et al (2019a). The macroseismic focal depth was estimated by Blake's relation using a new regional k coefficient computed by Oros et al (2019). When the macroseismic data were insufficient for applying the above-mentioned methods/relationships we used fixed values for the depth values calculated for the major morpho-structural large areas using recent digital data. The moment magnitude, Mw was calculated by i) MEEP/BKW methods or Mw=f (Io; Ri; Mi) conversions when the macroseismic intensity (Io), radii of isoseists (Ri) or instrumental magnitudes (Mi) were available and ii) the scalar moment method or a specific relationship (Oros et al, 2021) when historicl digitized seismograms we used. Mw estimated with MEEP/BKW methods were validated by comparison to those calculated with the relations Mw=f(Io/Imax; Ri; Ai) calibrated by Oros et al (2017). Selected references W.H. Bakun, C.M.
