Experimental and coastscape data on salinity responses and potential hyposaline exposure in Anomalocardia flexuosa
Description
This dataset contains experimental and spatial data used to assess behavioral and physiological responses of the bivalve Anomalocardia flexuosa to salinity variation and to characterize potential hyposaline exposure across its known distribution along the Brazilian coast. Missing values in the valve-opening dataset indicate individuals whose valve position could not be observed because they had burrowed into the sediment. Spatial data were obtained from Bio-ORACLE, WorldClim 2.1, and HydroRIVERS and were used to characterize background salinity, precipitation patterns, river discharge, drainage characteristics, and proximity to river mouths in environmental units representing known occurrence areas of the species. burrow.csv - Individual burrowing observations recorded after 4, 24, and 28 h of exposure to nine experimental salinities. Responses are coded as “sim” (burrowed) or “não” (not burrowed). valve_4hrs.csv - Individual valve-opening observations recorded after 4 h of exposure to nine experimental salinities. Binary values indicate whether the valves were observed open or closed. valve_24hrs.csv - Individual valve-opening observations recorded after 24 h of exposure to nine experimental salinities. Missing values indicate individuals that had burrowed and whose valve position could not be observed. valve_28hrs.csv - Individual valve-opening observations recorded after 28 h of exposure to nine experimental salinities. The observation followed the repositioning of specimens with the umbo facing upward. osm.csv - Individual hemolymph osmolality measurements obtained after 28 h of exposure to nine experimental salinities. Osmolality is expressed in mOsm kg⁻¹. th.csv - Individual tissue hydration measurements obtained after 28 h of exposure to nine experimental salinities. Tissue hydration is expressed as the percentage of water relative to tissue wet mass. lactato.csv - Individual lactate concentrations measured in adductor-muscle samples after 28 h of exposure to nine experimental salinities. ldh.csv - Individual lactate dehydrogenase activity measurements obtained from adductor-muscle samples after 28 h of exposure to nine experimental salinities. prot.csv - Total protein concentrations measured in adductor-muscle homogenates and used to normalize lactate dehydrogenase activity. Bio-ORACLE v3 sea-surface salinity data used to characterize background salinity conditions across the environmental units. WorldClim 2.1 bioclimatic data used to quantify annual precipitation, wettest-quarter precipitation, and precipitation seasonality. HydroRIVERS data and derived river-mouth locations used to quantify river discharge, drainage characteristics, and the distance between occurrence areas and river mouths.
