India's Gender Policies

In the past the status of women had got most honored in the Indian society and was exceedingly respected within and outside home. Gradually due to several socio-cultural and political changes and also male chauvinism, especially during the middle age, the magnificent status and power of social decision making of women dwindle down. The urge for equality on the part of Indian women started on noticeable level since independence. To empower women, Government of India has been taken sincere efforts and priority has been given in various plan periods for empowering the women. A noteworthy shift from welfare oriented approach of women empowerment to development approach infused in fifth five year plan and onward. Thus this paper discusses different policies implemented by government for empowering gender in India since its independence.
