PhyEddy-Net Global Mesoscale Eddy Detection Dataset (2010–2021)

Description

This dataset provides daily global mesoscale ocean eddy detections at 0.125° spatial resolution for the period 2010–2021, covering the global ice-free ocean between 60°S and 60°N. Detections were generated by PhyEddy-Net, a multimodal physics–data dual-driven deep-learning segmentation framework that fuses three daily fields: sea level anomaly (SLA) from the AVISO+ CMEMS DUACS DT2018 product, geostrophic relative vorticity computed from SLA-derived geostrophic velocities, and sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) from NOAA OISST v2.1 (interpolated from 0.25° to the 0.125° SLA grid). After patch-level training, full-global daily maps were produced through sliding-window inference and a fixed 3° spherical-radius deduplication step. The resulting catalogue contains approximately 36.7 million eddy detections (about 3.06 million per year on average). Each record contains the following variables: date (detection date, yyyy-mm-dd); type (eddy polarity, C = cyclonic, AC = anticyclonic); center_lat (centroid latitude, °); center_lon (centroid longitude, °, normalized to [−180, 180]); area (eddy area expressed as the number of 0.125° grid pixels in the segmented eddy mask); radius_km (equivalent-circle radius in km derived from area); prob (model detection probability, softmax confidence); basin (ocean basin identifier: Atlantic, Pacific, Indian). The released product has been independently validated against Argo profiling floats using a leave-one-out (LOO) polarity correction protocol. Evaluated on 5,176 clear cyclonic/anticyclonic Argo profiles over 2010–2012, PhyEddy-Net achieves a hit rate of 87.1% and a type agreement of 92.1% following the production LOO correction (63.3% for the raw model output). On the same profiles and matching criteria, the META4 altimetry atlas achieves 83.8% hit rate and 71.4% type agreement. Note that the released polarity is the LOO-corrected product polarity; the raw model polarity is not distributed. Note on amplitude: The maximum absolute SLA amplitude is used internally for quality checks but is not included in the released catalogue, and the segmentation masks are not distributed. Users who require amplitude can extract it from the original SLA product using the provided date, center_lat, and center_lon. Detections are restricted to latitudes outside ±5°, where geostrophic vorticity becomes unreliable; the dataset should not be used for equatorial eddy studies without additional validation. Trajectory tracking is not provided; users who need eddy lifecycles should apply their own tracking algorithm to the daily detections. Version notes: Version 1 listed amplitude among the provided fields. Version 2 adds the radius_km field and clarifies that amplitude is not distributed in the catalogue. The dataset is released under the CC BY 4.0 licence.
