Description

Our previous research found that Bajakah Tampala has relatively high flavonoid content and it showed antibacterial activity. However, we were in doubt on the sustainability of this type Bajakah. There fore, we have been continuing our research using the most numerous type of Bajakah which is Bajakah Kalalawit (BK). We believe that BK has high total flavonoid content and it has high antibacterial activity. The extraction of Bk was performed by decoction method. The total flavonoid content was determined by AlCl3 colorimetric assay and visible spectrophotometer. the assessment of antibacterial activity was conducted using Kirby-Bauer method against Escherichia coli. In addition, synthesis of flavonoid bio-nanopartcle was done by filtration, centrifugation, and gentle pipetting of supernatant of the flavonoid extract. The total flavonoid content of Bajakah Kalalawit was very high, much higher compared to 30 Indonesian, 21 Indian, and 93 Chinese medicinal plants. The size of flavonoid bio-nanoparticle was found to be 103 nm (by using Dynamic Light Scattering) with polydispersity Index of 0.1206. The efficacy of flavonoid extracted from Bajakah Kalalawit was much higher compared to that of chloramphenicol. At the same concentration of chloramphenicol 5% as positive control the efficacy of 5% flavonoid was approximately 135 times than that of chloramphenicol. Unlike toward chloramphenicol E. coli did not show resistance development to flavonoid. The findings indicate that Bajakah Kalalawit is a compelling source of flavonoid and flavonoid extracted for Bajakah Kalalawit has an extraordinary potential for future antibacterial agent.
