Description

Source data and code supporting the manuscript "Beyond NUE: A focus on true nitrogen gains in cereals" based on maize, sorghum, and barley datasets. README (README.txt). References, sources for the reviewed dataset. Dataset S1 (rev_dataset.xlsx). Review data on NUE related traits for maize, sorghum, and barley cultivars from different decades of commercial release collected from published literature. Missing values or information of studies are represented by “n/a” in the data. References of traits and variables included in the data are described in a separate sheet within the XLSX file. Dataset S2 (analysisR.pdf). R code for data processing, analysis, and visualization.

Steps to reproduce

Review data used in this study were extracted from eight published studies on literature: six for maize (Chen et al., 2016; Chen et al., 2014; Emmett et al., 2018; Fernández et al., 2022; Mueller et al., 2019; Woli et al., 2016), one for spring barley (Bingham et al., 2012), and one for sorghum (Demarco et al., 2023). The dataset includes entries of yield, biomass, nitrogen concentration, and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) indices. The associated metadata describing experimental site information, agronomic management practices, and genotypic information were retrieved from each publication. When needed, data were digitalized using WebPlotDigitizer (Rohatgi, 2017).
