Description

We are making available to the community a high resolution winter fog data record for South Asia derived using MODIS satellite observations. This data record results from our peer-reviewed publication in Remote Sensing of Environment, titled "Developing a long-term high-resolution winter fog climatology over south Asia using satellite observations from 2002 to 2020" (see citation at the bottom). The fog dataset consists of two folders namely "Fog detection dataset 2020-21" and "Fog Droplet Size". The folder "Fog detection dataset 2020-21" contains daily data for night-time fog detection maps for the period 1 December 2020 - 31 January 2021 at ~1 km X 1 km spatial resolution over South Asia bounded by 70°E - 95°E, 20°N - 33°N. This dataset is derived from Aqua/MODIS infrared emissivity dataset. For the complete description of the dataset and detection algorithms, refer to our article "Developing a long-term high-resolution winter fog climatology over south Asia using satellite observations from 2002 to 2020", published in the journal "Remote Sensing of Environment". The dataset is in the geotiff format. Each entry in the data is 0, 1, or 100; where '0' indicates the absence of fog, '1' indicates the presence of fog and the '100' represents the unavailability of the data from MODIS. We also simulated the Cloud Effective Radius (CER) which is a representation of the night-time fog/low-stratus droplet size in micrometers. In case of no fog the value of CER is NaN and is represented by '-999'. The annual average (December-January) CER is included in the folder "Fog droplet size".
