Description

In this study, we present the results of our high-precision major-oxides, trace elements, and Sr-Nd-Fe isotopic analyses and examination of secondary mineral assemblages from core to the rim of basaltic pillow lava from the Geotimes volcanic unit by using an ‘in situ’ sampling approach. Based on evaluating the impact of high-temperature processes, this study reveals that significant Fe isotopic fractionation occurs in oceanic basalts during hydrothermal alteration under various oxidized conditions. Additionally, our findings emphasize the need for caution when using whole-rock loss on ignition (LOI) as a discriminant factor for accessing the degree of hydrothermal alteration under strong oxidation conditions.
