Description

This data repository hosts the monthly beach profile surveys undertaken between December 2013 and November 2015 using RTK-GPS at all three beaches of the Shoalhaven Coastal Compartment, on the southeastern coast of Australia. Four profiles were monitored at Seven Mile Beach-Comerong Island (SH1, SH2, SH3 and SH4) and three profiles were monitored at Culburra (CU1-CU2 and CU3) and Warrain-Currarong (WA1, WA2 and WA3) beaches. Profiles, scheduled at low tide, were surveyed at a 1 m interval across the beaches down to 0 m AHD (Australian Height Datum). Technical problems prevented the collection of data during specific months at some locations and no surveys were conducted during the months of June 2014, January 2015, April 2015 and May 2015. Profile locations (GDA_1994_MGA_Zone_56; Transverse_Mercator): SH1: 299,394.613 Lon 6,149,853.897 Lat SH2: 296,939.003 Lon 6,147,702.392 Lat SH3: 294,278.257 Lon 6,141,141.964 Lat SH4: 294,243.712 Lon 6,137,602.183 Lat CU1: 295,855.795 Lon 6,134,693.361 Lat CU2: 295,943.708 Lon 6,133,321.577 Lat CU3: 296,526.167 Lon 6,132,352.159 Lat WA1: 297,084.590 Lon 6,131,777.251 Lat WA2: 297,907.127 Lon 6,125,922.995 Lat WA3: 300,671.613 Lon 6,123,136.590 Lat

Steps to reproduce

The Excel spreadsheet contains 10 tabs (one for each profile). Monthly surveys are found inside each tab. The data for each month is represented in three columns. The first is the distance between RTK-GPS points (Shape_Length); the second is the cumulative distance (Dist) from benchmark (0 m); the third is the elevation (Elev) of each point. To calculate the volume for each profile you need to multiply the average elevation between two consecutive points (starting from benchmark) by the individual Shape_Length. This will give the volume for each segment of the beach that is between two measurement points. Then, repeat this process for each cell until the elevation of 0 m AHD. Finally, you need to add up all these values to obtain a total volume for the profile.
