CONFEX: CONUS and Alaska Fire EXtent database
Description
CONFEX is a VIIRS S-NPP 375 m active-fire-derived fire-event perimeter database for the contiguous United States (CONUS) and Alaska for 2012–2024. The database provides detection-derived fire-event perimeter objects, ignition-proxy timing and location, end-detection timing, proxy event duration, centroid coordinates, mapped object area, land-cover context, fire-management status classification, possible volcanic-source diagnostic flags, and remaining spatiotemporal-overlap diagnostic flags. The release contains separate GeoPackage (.gpkg) files for CONUS and Alaska, together with corresponding CSV summary tables and a processing-region lookup file: CONFEX_CONUS_2012_2024.gpkg CONFEX_CONUS_2012_2024.csv CONFEX_Alaska_2012_2024.gpkg CONFEX_Alaska_2012_2024.csv confex_perimeter_region_lookup.csv Each GeoPackage contains final retained or overlap-merged fire-event perimeter geometries. Each CSV provides the corresponding tabular event-level attributes and can be joined to the GeoPackage using the perimeter_id field. Although the CSV files do not contain perimeter geometry, they include ignition-proxy and centroid coordinates in WGS 84, allowing records to be mapped or plotted as points. CONFEX was developed for wildfire applications, but because it is derived from VIIRS active-fire detections, it may also include prescribed burns, other vegetation fires, and potential volcanic thermal detections. These diagnostic attributes are retained to support interpretation rather than used as automatic exclusion criteria. CONFEX should therefore be interpreted as a broader fire-event database rather than as a strictly wildfire-only database or an exact burned-area boundary product.
