Description

This dataset was derived from readings obtained using the open-source software CyFi, which utilizes satellite imagery and machine learning to estimate cyanobacterial cell density in the Funil Reservoir, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The research hypothesis is to determine whether cyanobacterial cell counts estimated by the software align with results from previous studies conducted at this site, as well as to compare the outcomes with satellite imagery of the same region during the same period. Notably, statistical analyses (GAM) of this dataset reveal that cyanobacterial cell concentrations are higher in the southwestern areas of the reservoir, corresponding to the inflow region. Additionally, cell concentration varies across different times of the year, reflecting temporal fluctuations in cyanobacterial density.

Steps to reproduce

CyFi is open-source software (Python package) that performs cyanobacterial cell counts based on a pre-specified list of geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude). For data collection, 58 points were distributed across the entire Funil Reservoir in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Further details about the software, including installation, configuration, and operation instructions, can be found at: https://cyfi.drivendata.org/#quickstart.
